About Open House

Find out more about us and what we do

Our House is your House and we’re opening everyone’s doors to a healthier and sustainable future.

Open House is an organisation which began back in 2018, with a vision of educating the residents of Gateshead on issues surrounding climate change and encouraging a healthier way of life.

Since officially opening the House door, we’ve grown and evolved into a fully pledged Zero Waste Shop, the first of its kind south of the Tyne.

Meet the familiar face Richard... with helpers Lexi and Ste, the little family that run Open House

We offer a wide selection of package free wholefood produce, an array of soaps and shampoo bars, along with the much loved, body care and household cleaning refill station.

All of our products and foods are sourced with the highest ethical standards in mind, mostly being accredited as Fair Trade, Organic, Cruelty Free and British Made for example.

Our aim as an organisation is to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities. Buying foods in bulk allows us to pass on discounts to our service users, ensuring all demographics can access to healthy foods.

There are no limits on the amounts of product you can access with us. All of your purchases are made via the weight you wish to take, meaning if all you need is 50g of plain flour to make that sauce, that’s all you need to buy. Not only does this cut down on food waste, but it allows the money in your wallet to go much further than it would have usually.

We highlight issues surrounding the current climate crisis and engage with our customers in order to encourage deeper connections to the world around us. Take a few minutes out of your day and look up. Watch the birds, listen to the wind and chill.

Remember, a healthy planet means healthy humans!
